The History of Fuerst

Myron Fuerst was a 1929 graduate of Cornell University College of Agriculture, majoring in animal husbandry and minoring in farm management. He traveled extensively with emphasis on farming study,  including work in Argentina and Africa.

Myron started farming for himself in Pine Plains, Duchess County, New York in 1934. He developed an outstanding herd of Angus cattle and Percheron horses. He sold his Angus herd in 1952 for a  then-record price.

On a trip to England shortly after World War II in the late 1940s, Mr. Fuerst studied pasture management and came to the conclusion that a pasture harrow, which had been used for many years in  England and Scotland, could play an important part in pasture management in the United States and Canada. He started importing harrows and testing them on his farm in 1949. Those who came to his farm to buy cattle began  requesting harrows similar to the ones they saw Mr. Fuerst using. Mr. Fuerst saw the opportunity and began importing the best harrows he could find from England. This was the beginning of the Fuerst Brothers Company. Over the  years, more and more livestock breeders became interested in improving their pastures, and Mr. Fuerst's business flourished. The business continued to grow and harrows were distributed nationally through distributors and key  dealers in every state of the nation.

It became evident that there were more uses for Fuerst F-l-e-x-i-b-l-e Tine Harrows than just pasture management. After extensive testing programs both at universities and in the field, it was  shown that the Fuerst Harrow could be used to very good advantage for pre-emergence herbicide incorporation, seedbed preparation, and breaking up corn stalks in no-till farming. Other uses, such as maintenance of golf courses,  racetracks, parks, turf areas and overseeding practices, were developed over a period of time.

While maintaining his position as President of Fuerst Brothers, Mr. Fuerst continued in the cattle business from the 1950s to the early 1970s, in association with partners consisting of close  friends, under the name of Ankony Angus. At the time of its sale, this operation consisted on nine different divisions in six different states from New York to Texas to Montana. The combination of the livestock business and the  farm equipment business proved to be a perfect match for Myron Fuerst.

The Fuerst Brothers Company was sold to M&W Gear Company in 1987. M&W has continued to operate Fuerst Brothers as an independent company. Recently, the practice of importing Fuerst Harrows  was discontinued in favor of producing the units at a plant in New Albany, Mississippi. In addition to providing American jobs, this change has improved quality control and eliminated transportation problems.

Now owned by Alamo Group, Fuerst continues by providing harrows and other quality products to its customers. Many products have been added to the Fuerst line, always keeping in mind Myron's  tradition of providing a quality product capable of doing an excellent job with a minimum of maintenance. Newer products include the Post Hole Digger, Powered Mowers, Harrow Lifts, Harrow Carts, and small Manure  Spreaders.
